“I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.”

Winston Churchill

Values

As a simple exercise, take out a big sheet of paper and define what you see as your vision, mission, and values you keep close to your heart.

The values are important as they also define in which environments you will thrive the best. These are the environments and ecosystems that hold similar values.

Financial health

Review your financial status before you make any decision to quit your job, or embark on an uncertain adventure.

What savings do you have?

What assets do you have? (A house with a mortgage is not an asset, it is a liability to the bank)

What debt do you have?

What is your spending pattern (From basic household necessities to large expenditures)?

Does this pattern represent a sustainable approach?

What income and/or accumulated wealth will you need to achieve financial independence?

Can you specify the financial goal(s) you have in mind?

Meditate on it

Many people do know perfectly what they don't want in life... They don't want their current boring job anymore, nor the nasty manager/superior they currently have. They don't want to stress over their finances.

On the other hand, most people don’t really know where they want to go. Or a faint idea, but not clear and specific!

Try this meditation exercise, put on some relaxing music, and put yourself in a comfortable position with no distractions.

Close your eyes and focus on 1 thing: try to visualize the destination you want to reach in your professional life.

Where do you want to go in your professional life?

Imagine yourself one year from now and looking back.

Ask yourself; what actions did you take, what decision did you make to achieve where you will be in one year's time?

How does that future vision make you feel?

career status

Reflecting on your current position, how would you rate it on a scale of 0-10 (ten being best).......

1. Your career growth opportunities?

2. Your salary and benefits?

3. Your daily interaction with your team members - colleagues?

4. Your interaction with your leadership?

5. Your job security?

Any score below 7 would require a good introspection and the WHY.

Manage VUCA

Managing VUCA to your advantage

Volatility:

Create a compelling vision and a set of values for yourself. This will provide a clear focus and will guide you to changes in your life. Hold on to values as a beacon of light.

Uncertainty:

Analyze and understand the situation. What is going on? What's new in your industry? When you get some clarity, you'll be able to anticipate potential threats and take advantage of new opportunities.

Complexity:

Focus on gaining clarity, pinpointing the signals from the noise, and communicating without complex jargon. Define for yourself a clear path forward and if needed with directions. Reduce the clutter.

Ambiguity:

Stay agile and adaptable during uncertain times. Define your course and targets. Prepare for the future by learning new skills and enhancing your core competencies.
